Two Dead in Fiery Crash at Rainbow Bridge Checkpoint in Niagara Falls

Two people died in a fiery crash at the Rainbow Bridge checkpoint on the American side of the U.S.-Canada border in Niagara Falls on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. The incident involved a speeding vehicle that hit a median, took flight, and then burst into flames, according to law enforcement sources. The vehicle was a Bentley, and investigators believe that the driver, a man from New York State, was traveling with his wife at a high rate of speed. The couple had plans to attend a KISS concert in Canada, but when it was canceled, they went to a casino in the US instead. The crash occurred after the couple left the casino.

The Rainbow Bridge, which connects the US and Canada at Niagara Falls, New York, was closed after the explosion on the US side of the bridge. The FBI found no explosive materials and no terrorism nexus after concluding their investigation at the scene. The incident led to closures and delays on a busy travel day, and early on, prompted concerns it might be a terror attack, but the incident does not appear to be terrorism-related.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she's closely monitoring the situation, and the FBI is at the scene. Law enforcement is placing K-9 officers on each of the international bridges in the area as a precautionary measure, according to sources. The United States and Canadian governments went into high alert, four international bridges were closed, and cross-border train travel came to a halt after the incident.

The incident is still under investigation, and authorities are trying to identify the victims. The Rainbow Bridge and three other bridges between western New York and Ontario were quickly closed as a precaution, though the other three bridges were reopened later.
